Welcome - the Institute of Geography at the University of Bremen introduces itself


This section provides information about our Institute’s profile including research and study programmes. Furthermore, an introduction to the working groups and the topics of our geographical colloquium lecture series are addressed.


For undergraduate studies, we offer several bachelor programmes (B.A., B.Sc.); in graduate studies we currently offer a master programme in human geography (M.A.) on ‘Urban and Regional Development’ in cooperation with the Institute for Sociology (Faculty 8) and we contribute to the Master of Education (M.Ed.) for future teachers, in close cooperation with Faculty 12. A third master programme in physical geography will start in October 2016. The topic is on ‘Physical Geography: Environmental History’ which is offered in cooperation with the Institute of History (Faculty 8), the Institute of Environmental Physics (Faculty 1), the Geosciences Department (Faculty 5) and with regional research institutions. Furthermore, several PhD programmes are available. Degrees are offered in the Dr. rer. pol., Dr. rer. nat. and Dr. phil. programmes.


The research activities of the Institute of Geography relate to topics and approaches in physical and human geography. The four research teams of the Institute of Geography are supported by the Sustainability Research Centre (artec). Additionally, lecturers are responsible for the field of didactics in geography.
